The Importance of Women In Tech

The rise of women in tech has been a hot topic in the tech industry for some time now, and it seems that more and more women are entering the industry and making a statement.

Over the last decade there has been steady growth in the number of women in tech jobs globally. The global percentage of women in tech roles rose from 25% in 2010 to 28% in 2019 (According to the World Economic Forum). In the US, the percentage of women in tech roles has increased from 25% in 2010 to 26.5% in 2019. The UK has seen the biggest increase, from 17% in 2010 to 23.8% in 2019. In Ireland, according to a 2019 survey, women now make up 28% of the tech workforce, which is an increase of 5% since 2017. However, even taking the growth into account, only 17% of the global tech workforce is female.

This indicates a huge discrepancy when compared to the number of men in the industry. The gender gap in tech is slowly closing, however, as more and more women are taking up roles in the industry. Women are not only entering the tech industry but are also excelling in it.

What attributes can Women bring to the Tech Table? I thought you’d never ask!

It is no coincidence that ‘WOMAN’ is an acronym for “Well Oiled Machine at Next-Level”. Research has shown that women tend to be more focused and organised. Studies have found that women have better self-control, are better at multitasking (which I think all us ladies can confirm) and are better at resisting distractions. Women have also been found to be better at planning and organizing tasks and been found to be more likely to complete tasks in the prescribed order rather than jumping from one task to another. Women are also more likely to take a longer-term view when it comes to planning and goal setting. (Who run the world? Girls!)

Women may bring a different approach to problem solving and may be more likely to recognise and consider potential implications of a technology or product. Women also bring creativity, empathy, and collaboration to the tech world, which can help to create more innovative and successful products. Additionally, having a diverse team can create a more inclusive and productive work environment.

Women add value to the tech world by bringing a unique perspective to the industry. Women often have a different outlook and have been through different experiences than men, and these can be extremely useful when it comes to developing new technologies, products, and services.

Let’s hope this year brings more growth of Women in Tech.
