How to Look After Your Well being While Working in Isolation

With a global pandemic underway, an unprecedented number of people are isolated at home. It’s vitally important, now more than ever, that we are mindful of our wellbeing.

What we see as our normal, everyday lives have been put on hold – everything has changed. What is important during times of uncertainty and upheaval is finding some normality and comfort. Studies have shown that having a daily routine can help us feel normal.

Set your alarm for the same time as you would normally, get up and get ready for the day.
Get dressed in something semi-professional
Spend your usual commute time doing something meaningful like a quick workout, meditation or whatever makes you feel happy.

A routine that considers your basic needs will help you regain a sense of control in your life, restoring some calm. BACE is a tool that can help you keep track:
Body, Achievement, Connection, Enjoyment.

Body

The gyms are closed and we are spending all day at home. It’s all too easy to reach for some snacks and worry about getting back to exercise when the gyms reopen. It’s now, however, that we should pay close attention to our physical wellbeing, with all the comforts of home (and snacks) surrounding us.

If you normally go to the gym after work, use this time to get some exercise in. We are still allowed to venture outside for exercise, this is a perfect time to keep fit as well as get some fresh air and relieve some stress.

Sleep is also important; it affects every aspect of our physical wellbeing. Being well rested will help you feel more motivated and help productivity. Breaks are also important so you don’t start to feel burnt out.

Achievement

Set yourself achievable goals for each day. The day before, make a list of things that you want to achieve the following day. That will allow you get started and not lose focus first thing in the morning. As you complete them, physically cross them off the list. Crossing things off a to-do list has been proven to release dopamine, the hormone that makes us happy. Another thing we think can be useful is to write down your wins for the day so you can look back and remember that you are achieving something.

Connection

Connection is a basic human need; we need it from the day we’re born and throughout our lives. In a time of social distancing, it can be difficult to stay connected to others. You may not be isolated alone, allowing you to maintain meaningful connections, but it’s important to stay connected to your team. This allows you to feel a sense of common purpose and accomplishment.

Enjoyment

Do something you enjoy every day. There are lots of things to be worried about but it’s important to combat that by doing something you enjoy. Read a book, watch a movie, paint something, whatever it may be, keep it up.

Warning Signs

There are signs that you’re getting overwhelmed that you can look out for, both in yourself and in others. It’s important that we look out for each other:

  • Not wanting to get up in the mornings
  • Low mood
  • Anxiety
  • Irritable
  • Loss of interest
  • Change in appetite, energy, or mood

If you start to feel concerned for someone’s, or your own mental health, don’t be afraid to talk.
